some frames and a life drawing... the storyboards done with my tablet PC or my new cintiq. the photo is of my late, great life drawing master teacher from CSULB - John Lincoln. i opened a fortune cookie that summed up life class with John, "Teaching is not filling a bucket but lighting a fire".

here's some work-related ones. i've tried to adopt the storyboard method of my pal adolfo martinez (whose cintiq i first ventured out on!...); wherein one starts with traditionally drawn thumbnails , and he wisely draws them on thumbsized post-it notes keeping thumbnails from growing into full-sized 'roughs'. then, once the visualization and most adjustments are made in this fast scale, one redraws them on the tablet.

recently bought a new/used/off-the-back-of-a-truck HP Tablet PC (with the wacom tablet screen on it) as a baby-step towards doing my work on the cintiq. the eventual plan being: 1) a cintiq for the office 2) the Tablet PC for home & travel.

i find it alot of fun, even though i'd spent alot of time these last few years on photoshop (thanks to the endless tutelage on spidey from the legendary anthony zierhut!...), there's still a learning curve to drawing exclusively with the photoshop tools. about a year ago, i drew a sequence on a cintiq for 'Terminator 4' over a couple of weeks time; and i remember feeling kinda sad using this new techno-tool. i, literally, sighed looking over at my markers & refills laying idle. worse was thinking , "...what if i never get to use those again? a lifetime spent acquiring a language with those tools" ...i'm not sure what or when the 'seed change' occurred for me (maybe i became a replicant and i'm actually coming-home to my digital nature...yikes!).

more likely i believe i wanted to challenge myself to do it, as bronowski said, "... the hand drives the subsequent evolution of the brain...". as for myself, i'm often driven by some vision of myself being better at all of this stuff.. ha!

my first drawing with it was of fellow storyboard artist dan sweetman. next, i thought - 'if i want to learn to draw with this, what better than to take the tablet drawing' , so i took the tablet to life drawing ; since then came the rest shown.

although storyboarding is my job, drawing is my life. anybody who knows me, knows that sooner or later i'll be drawing you, probably at lunch. i used to carry a sketchbook ALWAYS, the habit started under john lincoln's life drawing tutelage @ CSULB. we all carried them then & we were always drawing. it becomes a part of how you interact with your life's events; to record them & in some way honor them, the drawing as part of the event remembered, even if it is just lunch. in time i've streamlined the process - i carry 5 x 7 index cards & a stub of a black prismacolor pencil; the drawing being done in the time between being seated and getting our food. being index cards they're easier to dole out & insist others draw too! shown are some restaurant sketches of my family; and a couple by them as well.

... you mean , there was life before hollywood? well... there was school before hollywood for me. was looking at old, old stuff & thought id better post something! heres a comic strip from my high school newspaper featuring my alter-ego hippie/surfer dude 'hal roach' (the word 'slacker' hadnt been coined yet) & some editorial 'toons from my CSULB days on the union newspaper.

another post; thought i'd resort to my usual default of "when you can't think of anything to say - do drawings!" still rolling in the warm swell of 'spidey 3' attention. as storyboard artist the groundswell of congrats & smiles is nice, but with the added credit of 'second unit director' - people look at you twice & actually want to listen to my self-effacing mumblings. though people in general still don't know what either job actually is....

Cannes Convention '07

'twas my first trip to paris! first trip to europe actually... the MIP-TV convention in Cannes trying to sell an animated trailer as a TV series. Mr. Fujii developed 2 properties- one animated in Paris and one in LA. Though the experience was very "conventiony" (alot of standing in front of the booth hawking to potential distibutors & partners), being in the company of both veteran & maverick animators from France made for a welcoming & inspiring week. Having movies, animation and art in common was the best common ground one could ask for...

'tis hard to know what's safe to say; what might come back to bite you on the ass - perhaps safer said as 'sayings'. on my links list i have the 'hucksblog' site; the pithy name of the site " i find your lack of faith disturbing" i cant figure out how to list . anyway, it's a blog by a screenwriter who writes w/o the slightest trace of fear as he lays bare all that is fucked-up in hollywood- it's shockingly bold (& funny). so, in the middle of a recent all-nighter, i find myself feeling right in the middle of all that is f-ed in h'wd, and being fond of coming up with 'sayings' my latest is , "... this job is hard enough when they help!...". feeling as we were, under-appreciated & rudder-less. that saying came on the heels of an even more dour one; said to my well-liked co-worker, ..." i so look forward to working with you - on the NEXT movie!...". i think my favorite saying came from norman reynolds, " the best part of the job is the first phone call"
